The method

The Ecommerce Engine™

The Engine is a visualisation of your ecommerce performance.

Score your own engine

Put your numbers in. See where your engine is blocked.

Enter the numbers you know and switch off any service you do not run: your block shows up as you type, and nothing leaves this page.

Try it

Load an example engine and watch the scores, the flow and the reading below change. Then put in your own numbers.

Set a weight on any service to say how much it matters, for example its share of spend, and the section score follows that rather than treating every service the same. Leave them blank to weigh everything equally. The goals start at typical ecommerce averages and can be changed to your own targets. Clear puts them back. In the free 4-week trial we score your engine against your own sector, from your own analytics, ad accounts and email platform.

The story

Built for clients who did not have the time.

The Ecommerce Engine™ started as a project for our clients, to solve a problem they kept running into.

  1. 01

    The problem

Most of our clients did not have the luxury of time. Going through every channel, every pillar and every number, week after week, was not something a founder could do on top of running the business.

  2. 02

    The first diagnostic

So, to keep our clients happy, we started building an all-in-one diagnostic. Its job is to report the problems, rather than spending the time to identify them.

  3. 03

    The right priorities

Most of the time the priorities were not right either. The Engine puts the priorities that affect performance in order, so the issues get resolved much faster.

  4. 04

    Our centrepiece

What started as a project for our clients became our centrepiece. Today it is how we work, and every free 4-week trial begins with it.

Questions

The Ecommerce Engine, asked and answered.

Short answers to what founders ask us most about the engine, the scores and the calculator above.

Ask us on WhatsApp, or start the free 4-week trial and we will walk you through your own engine in week one.

What is the Ecommerce Engine?

It is our diagnostic model for an ecommerce business. Three sections, Traffic, Website & Branding Performance and Customer Retention, each made of scored components, each limited by the section before it. Scoring all three tells you which single thing is holding growth back.

How is each component scored out of 100?

A score is your position against the industry average for that specific metric in your sector. It is not our opinion of your work. A 40 on landing page conversion means your conversion rate sits well below its goal, and the gap is the size of the opportunity.

Why does the lowest score decide the work?

Because the sections run in sequence. Traffic cannot fix a page that does not convert, and neither can fix a customer who never returns. Spending on a healthy section while a weak one sits downstream multiplies the loss instead of the revenue.

How long does a diagnosis take?

The first one happens in week one of the free 4-week trial. We need access to your analytics, ad accounts and email platform, and the scoring is produced from your own data rather than an audit template.

Do I have to use all the services?

No. The point of scoring the Engine is to find the one section that is actually limiting growth, so most engagements start with a fraction of what we offer. If the constraint is retention, we are not going to sell you more advertising.

How does the calculator score my numbers?

Each KPI you enter is compared with its goal, which starts at a typical ecommerce average. Meeting the goal scores 100 out of 100, beating it scores more than 100, and falling short scores less. Above 75 is healthy, 65 to 75 needs watching, and below 65 is a block. A service scores the average of its KPIs and a section the average of its services. The lowest section is your block.

Where do the goals come from?

The calculator uses typical ecommerce averages as a reference point. In the free 4-week trial we replace them with the goals for your own sector and score your engine from your own analytics, ad accounts and email platform.

Is the data I enter stored anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us or saved.
