Benchmarks
What is a good ecommerce conversion rate?
Every benchmark you have read blends fashion with industrial supply and calls the result an average. Here is a more useful way to read the number.

The short answer
Most ecommerce stores convert between 1.5% and 3%. Fashion and beauty sit at the higher end, considered purchases and high ticket items at the lower. Anything above 4% usually means a large share of returning or branded traffic rather than an unusually persuasive site.
Why the average is close to useless
A conversion rate is a ratio between two things you control separately: who arrives and what happens next. Change the traffic mix and the rate moves without a single change to the site. A store that turns off branded search will watch its conversion rate fall and its profit rise.
Read it split, or do not read it at all
Split by device first. Mobile typically converts at half the rate of desktop, and most stores carry two thirds of their traffic on mobile, so a blended figure hides the actual problem. Then split by source. Paid social lands colder than search and should not be judged against it.
When conversion is the constraint
Conversion is your constraint when traffic is healthy and cost per acquisition is still rising. That is the specific case where more budget makes things worse, because you are paying more for visits the page does not convert. Fixing the page raises the return on every channel at once.
What actually moves it
In our audits, in order: the product page failing to answer an objection, an unexpected cost or step at checkout, slow real world load times on mobile, and missing proof. Design refreshes come last and move it least.
